Steve received his bachelors' degree from DePauw University in 1991 and his law degree from the University of Missouri School of Law in 1994. His legal career has included working for Boeing Enterprises and most recently working in the Ex Parte/ Probate Department of the King County Superior Court. He has also spent several years in private law practice since 1994. His practice focuses on simple wills and estate planning, probate, trusts, and guardianship.

Steve served as a city council member for the City of Maple Valley from 2000 to 2003. He has been involved in the Maple Valley Rotary Club and as a Board Member and President of the Greater Maple Valley/ Black Diamond Chamber of Commerce. He has been involved in the Big Brothers program since 1998, and he enjoys cycling, drumming and hiking in his free time.
